Dying Chinese New Year customs

Society development causes change of tradition. Some traditional Chinese New Year customs which have been practiced for long time are dying today. However, through these customs we can get some knowledge about ancient Chinese culture. 

1. The taboos on the first day of Chinese New Year
Man can't use sweep on the first day of Chinese New Year, otherwise the good lucks will be swept away. Man can’t throw waste. Trash and waste water must be kept until next day.

2. The married daughters visit their parents
On the second day of Chinese New Year, married daughters visit their parents with their husbands. They must bring some gifts to the parents and the children who they can meet on visiting.

3. Red dog day
The third day of Chinese New Year is Red Dog Day. Red dog is a homophone of "red mouth", which means conflict. Man must not visit anyone this day, because this day is thought to be a day on which it is easy to happen conflict.

4. Worship Money God
On the fourth day of Chinese New Year, people worship Money God. However, in the mordern time many worship Money God often in the ordinary days, so it is no longer necessary to set this day as a special day for worshiping Money God.

5. Break five
The fifth day of Chinese New Year is called as "break five". On this day, people stay up early in the morning, clean home and burn firecracker to break five kinds of poverty: intelligence poverty, study poverty, culture poverty, fortune poverty and relationship poverty.

6. Business reopening
On the sixth day of Chinese New Year shops and restaurants are reopened for customers. The employees burn firecracker in front of the restaurants and shops. Boys of 6 or 12 years old are especially welcomed to visit, because nummber six means "Good luck", 12 means "double good luck", and male means "positive".

7. Human day
The seventh day of Chinese New Year is the day of human. According to legends, God created human at the seventh days. On this day, people eat "champion rice gruel", which symbolizes that the family can produce a champion of a national exam.

8. Corn day
The eighth day of Chinese New Year is the day of corn. On this day, people observe stars in the sky to predict about weather of the year. People believe that the more stars there are in the sky, the better harvest people will get this year.

9. Worship the heaven
The ninth day of Chinese New Year is the day of the Jade Emperor in the heaven. On this day, people hold grand celebrations to worship the heaven.

10. Stone day
The tenth day of Chinese New Year is the day of stone. On this day, man must not touch any tool made of stone. In some regions, people worship stone this day.

11. Invite the husband of daughter for dinner
The eleventh day of Chinese New Year is the day to invite son in law for dinner. Food used for worshipping Heaven on the ninth day of Chinese New Year must be kept to be food for the dinner. 

12. The taboos must be hold in all the fifteen days of Chinese New Year
Man can't crush furniture or any family thing. Otherwise the money luck of the family will be crushed. If man unfortunately has crushed such things, he/she must say loudly immediately: "Blooming on the floor brings richness and prosperity!" or "Safety every year!" to break the curse brought by the crushing.
