How do Chinese minorities celebrate Chinese New Year

There are 55 minorities in China. Some of them celebrate only their own New Years, some of them celebrate only Chinese New Year and some other celebrate both Chinese New Year and their own New Years. Usually, the minorities celebrate Chinese New Year in their own ways. 

Mongolian
Mongolian people like white color. They call the first month of a lunar year as the white month, and the Lunar New Year as the white festival. They start to prepare for Chinese New Year celebration since the 23th of the last month of the old year. The preparation work includes cleaning and decorating the Yurts, decorating the livestock, preparing new clothes, sending gifts, usually a whole lam or whole cattle with Hada, to their relatives and friends. On Chinese New Year's Eve they eat hand-held mutton together with their families. On the Chinese New Year day, Mongolian people propose toasts to the older and present Hada to their friends and relatives.

Bai mintority
Bai people begin to congratulate Chinese New Year and give presents to each other since Chinese New Year's Eve. When Chinese New Year's Eve ends young men and women fill the water tanks of their families to show that they are hardworking persons. At the morning of the Chinese New Year day, people sit together with their families and drink gruel of sweet rice popcorn, which symbolizes that life will be sweet. After the breakfast, they leave home to watch entertainment programs, such as, lion dancing, dragon dancing and bully whipping, on streets. 

Korean minority
On Chinese New Year's Eve Korean welcome Chinese New Year together with their families. Music of Jiayue and flute companies them to spend the waiting time. They hold many entrainments, such as tug of war, dancing, seesaw, etc. in the festival. On the fifteenth day of Chinese New Year, they choose some old people to climb moon landing frames. The earlier an old person sees the moon from the moon landing frame, the luckier his/her family will be. After the climbing competition, they lighten the frame and dance around it. 

Daur minority
On Chinese New Year's Eve, every family makes a pile of combustible debris. On the evening, the oldest person in family lightens the pile and throws meat, dumplings and some other food into the burning pile, and blesses the family to be safe and rich. After the ritual, people eat hand-held mutton and dumpling Jiaozi, and worship their ancestors. There are many entertainments, such as hockey camp, Masquerade, listening books and singing, in the festival.

Gaoshan minority

In Chinese New Year, Gaoshan people put on colorful national clothes, and drink and dance together. They hold also some competitions, such as forking fish competition and pole ball camp, to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Hezhe minority

In Chinese New Year, every woman and child of Hezhe put on clothes with cloud-pattern embroidery. In addition, they decorate their houses with paper-cuts and lanterns, and make many various fish dishes. They hold also group entertainments, such as forking grass ball, shooting and ski, to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Lagu minority
Lagu people celebrate Chinese New Year on the first four days of Chinese New Year. On Chinese New Year's Eve, every family makes a pair of sticky rice cakes. The rice cakes symbolize good agricultural year. They slaughter pigs and hold parties when they wait for Chinese New Year.

Man minority
Man people decorate their home with couplets, paper-cuts and signs of the word "God" before Chinese New Year. On Chinese New Year's Eve, all family members sit together and make dumpling Jiaozi. Jiaozi made on Chinese New Year’s eve must have wrinkled edges, and must be put in lines. This symbolizes good luck in the coming year.

She minority
She people make sticky rice cakes on Chinese New Year's Eve. Sticky rice cakes symbolize good life. On the Chinese New Year day, they worship Pangu, their oldest ancestor, and commemorate hard working of their ancestors.

Tujia minority
Tujia people hold many entertainments in Chinese New Year. They dance "shake hand dance", dragon dance and lion dance, and hold opera show and Kungfu show.

Wa minority
On the Chinese New Year day, Wa people congratulate Chinese New Year to each other, and give Banana, sticky rice cakes or sugar canes as gifts to their friends and relatives. In some regions, Wa people dance much "circle dance" to celebrate Chinese New Year.
