Chinese New Year market

Chinese New Year market means the food and daily necessity markets from several days before Chinese New Year to the last day of the festival. In the period the markets are very busy, because Chinese buy many gifts and food. Chinese are used to preparing much more food than they usually need during Chinese New Year festival, because they can have many visitors in the period.

Miao Hui, called as Chinese New Year fair in English, is a speical part of Chinese New Year market. They are the tempoary free markets formed in the Chinese New Year festival beside temples. The goods sold on a Chinese New Year fair are normally handicrafts and artworks with local characters and traditional local food. In addition, there can be some shows, such as, circus, folk art show, parade, etc. on a Chinese New Year fair.

Chinese New Year fair is a traditional Chinese New Year celebration custom. In ancient time, Chinese were used to worshipping Gods in temples during Chinese New Year festival. The people assemblies attracted many businessmen and local artists, so that free markets were formed beside the temples. Chinese New Year fair has already existed since Tang dynasty (618-907).

In recent years Chinese New Year fairs in many regions of China have become rather grand. In some regions the lantern party and Chinese New Year fair are even held together to increase the festival atmosphere. Because they are very rich in content, the Chinese New Year fairs have become very popular for the local people.
