Chinese New Year clothes Traditionally dirty and tattered clothes are taboos on Chinese New Year festival. The psychology behind the custom is just like many other Chinese New Year customs, which have strong symbolic significances. Ancient Chinese thought the things happen or used in Chinese New Year are closely related to one's luck in the new year, so they must be as good as possible. This thought has been inherited generation after generation until today.

There are additonally certain restrictions about the colors of Chinese New Year clothes. Black and white are unauspicious colors in Chinese traditional culture, therefore Chinese avoid using clothes in these colors during Chinese New Year festival. However, on offical and formal parties, it is usual to use black dress because of impaction of international convention. However, many Chinese choose to use red decorations except the black dresses to fit Chinese tradition.

Although red color is the main color for Chinese New Year celebration, Chinese don't wear much red clothes for the festival. The adults use clothes in whatever color but the unauspicious color. Many parents let small children wear clothes in strong and bright colors, because auspicious colors are generally strong and bright.

Today, Chinese don't use their traditional clothes for Chinese New Year celebration, but it is quiet normal that the program leaders in various entertainment programs to wear traditional clothes to increase the festive atmosphere.
